Darwin's Fox

Darwin's Fox (IUNC, 2016)

The captivating dark grey fox pictured is the Darwin's Fox. They typically have a lifespan of 3 to 7 years,  measuring as adults at 4 to 8.7 pounds, total length of 19 to 23 inches, and a tail that is 7 to 10 inches. These creatures have a small population in select forest and shrubland areas of Chile and the Chiloe Island.  There numbers have been difficult to accurately calculate, however it has now been established that they are classified on the IUCN Red List as Endangered level C1.  The Darwin's Fox has the prediction of further decreasing population numbers.  This fox, that was found to be genetically not a fox and has ancestor linage closer to that of wolves, drew my attention not only due to its captivating and majestic beauty, but it's unique species traits and surrounding ecosystem.
